Dalam sebuah hadis, Rasulullah bercerita, ”Di hari kiamat nanti ada orang yang mati syahid diperintahkan oleh Allah untuk masuk ke neraka. Lalu orang itu melakukan protes, ‘Wahai Tuhanku, aku ini telah mati syahid dalam perjuangan membela agama-Mu, mengapa aku dimasukkan ke neraka?’ Allah menjawab, ‘Kamu berdusta dalam berjuang. Kamu hanya ingin mendapatkan pujian dari orang lain, agar dirimu dikatakan sebagai pemberani.
Dan, apabila pujian itu telah dikatakan oleh mereka, maka itulah sebagai balasan dari perjuanganmu’.” Orang yang berjuang atau beribadah demi sesuatu yang bukan ikhlas karena Allah SWT, dalam agama disebut riya. Sepintas, sifat riya merupakan perkara yang sepele, namun akibatnya sangat fatal. Sifat riya dapat memberangus seluruh amal kebaikan, bagaikan air hujan yang menimpa debu di atas bebatuan. Allah SWT berfirman, ”Dan Kami hadapi segala amal yang mereka kerjakan, lalu Kami jadikan amal itu (bagaikan) debu yang beterbangan.” (Al-Furqan: 23).
Abu Hurairah RA juga pernah mendengar Rasulullah bersabda, ”Banyak orang yang berpuasa, namun tidak memperoleh sesuatu dari puasanya itu kecuali lapar dan dahaga, dan banyak pula orang yang melakukan shalat malam yang tidak mendapatkan apa-apa kecuali tidak tidur semalaman.” Begitu dahsyatnya penyakit riya ini, hingga ada seseorang yang bertanya kepada Rasulullah, ”Apakah keselamatan itu?” Jawab Rasulullah, ”Apabila kamu tidak menipu Allah.” Orang tersebut bertanya lagi, ”Bagaimana menipu Allah itu?
” Rasulullah menjawab, ”Apabila kamu melakukan suatu amal yang telah diperintahkan oleh Allah dan Rasul-Nya kepadamu, maka kamu menghendaki amal itu untuk selain Allah.” Meskipun riya sangat berbahaya, tidak sedikit di antara kita yang teperdaya oleh penyakit hati ini. Kini tidak mudah untuk menemukan orang yang benar-benar ikhlas beribadah kepada Allah tanpa adanya pamrih dari manusia atau tujuan lainnya, baik dalam masalah ibadah, muamalah, ataupun perjuangan. Meskipun kadarnya berbeda-beda antara satu dan lainnya, tujuannya tetap sama: ingin menunjukkan amaliyahnya, ibadah, dan segala aktivitasnya di hadapan manusia.
Tanda-tanda penyakit hati ini pernah dinyatakan oleh Ali bin Abi Thalib. Kata beliau, ”Orang yang riya itu memiliki tiga ciri, yaitu malas beramal ketika sendirian dan giat beramal ketika berada di tengah-tengah orang ramai, menambah amaliyahnya ketika dirinya dipuji, dan mengurangi amaliyahnya ketika dirinya dicela.” Secara tegas Rasulullah pernah bersabda, ”Takutlah kamu kepada syirik kecil.” Para shahabat bertanya, ”Wahai Rasulullah, apa yang dimaksud dengan syirik kecil?” Rasulullah berkata, ”Yaitu sifat riya. Kelak di hari pembalasan, Allah mengatakan kepada mereka yang memiliki sifat riya, ‘pergilah kalian kepada mereka, di mana kalian pernah memperlihatkan amal kalian kepada mereka semasa di dunia. Lihatlah apakah kalian memperoleh imbalan pahala dari mereka’?” Wallahu a’lam. (Tatik Chusniyati)
